It is obvious King wrote this at the beginning of his career. He even acknowledges his early mistakes and said that he went through and revised many after he finished the 7th book.
All things considered, a very good novel. As in gotta read the next book to find out what happens, the the next etc. I am an avid reader, approximately books per year on a variety of topics and themes. I powered through over half of the book before I asked myself; WTH am I spending my time reading this nonsense. I will never attempt to finish this book due to the intense boredom of it.
I can’t say more than that except don’t waste your time. I have read the entire epic series This is a gift for a friend; the first book in the tower series. King takes you into Roland of Gilead’s world as you share his quest for the dark tower.
Unlike anything else Stephen King has done The movie was a terrible attempt to capture the richness of King’s work. Don’t consider it an indicator of what you will experience by reading. I like how King explores string theory and parallel universes here. This story is like a perfectly balanced soup we sometimes eat at a restaurant that’s not too much of this or where it’s not lacking in that. The mixed in genres, The Hobbit, King Arthurian legend, Doc Holiday, Biblical references and of course, horror are beautifully written.
He weaves in other stories in here like, The Talisman, Insomnia, IT, and even Pet Sematary, The black magic crystal that lets you travel to the land of the dead in his later D. The villains in these series are as intriguing to me as the enigmatic, archetype gunslinger is. And they range in variety as they do in lethality. I suppose that like Roland, if you don’t have much of an imagination, then you should read a senseless love novel where there’s infidelity like in these tube soap operas and silly reality t.
The story is not boring at all!!!! I put off reading this book my entire life because of the negative reviews. Now I wish I’d never listened. Starting reading it and couldn’t put it down. My favorite King novel and favorite book in general used to be The Stand. Now it’s a toss up between that and The Gunslinger. It’s a slow burning ACT I. The entire purpose of book one is to set up the series. You simply have to stop waiting for something ultra exciting to happen and learn to really appreciate the strange setting that King is painting.
Really invest in the most seemingly insignificant characters and their stories. Invest in the story and the lives of these characters the way one might invest in Luke Skywalker or Frodo Baggins. Do that and I promise you this tale is one of the more rewarding books you’ll read. Why would you do that in the first book of a series? Riddle and others. After all, prior to Amazon a writer could not easily get their works known or published. I now wonder if King is really deserving of his lofty place amongst well known literary authors.
I feel the weight of this journey just as Roland does. My only saving grace is that I can pause his journey for the Dark Tower to continue my own. I do not possess the eloquent way that this great author can write, so I know this review holds no candle to his talent, but if you are ready for a journey as life changing as an acid trip, please, do read this.
