Gain Staging: How to set Levels in your Mix – Aulart

When you invert the phase of a signal heard in isolation, it sounds identical to the original. When the signal is heard in conjunction with other signals, however, phase inversion may have an audible effect. For example, if you place microphones above and below a snare drum, inverting the phase of either microphone can improve or ruin the sound. As always, rely on your ears.
In peak mode, it calculates the highest sample value and pushes it down to the selected calibration value between and dB. In average mode, the average RMS is calculated and Landon-Algorithm-Goodness is used to set the gain stage for calibration. Keep in mind that this average mode is not suitable for stable or limited signals. This type of signal will be inaccurate. Ideal for dynamic materials such as vocals and drum bass.
There is an unresolved issue that only occurs when using Logic Pro on an M1 Mac that does not use Rosetta. This does not affect the audio processing and does not occur when the plug-in is first placed on the track.
You should be able to get it loud enough that you can hear it comfortably whilst preventing the channel from clipping. At this point, your mix is well balanced and the level on the master bus is close enough to 0dBFS without clipping. At this point, you might be tempted to use some dynamics processing on the master bus to increase perceived loudness.
But before you grab your favourite compressor or limiter, I suggest that you bounce the mix out to 24 bit and do all of this in a separate mastering session. Give some time between the two sessions so that you can come back to the Mastering stage witrh fresh ears. Unlock a bundle of free resources to help you create and release your music.
What is gain staging? The fader is in itself a gain stage. This is especially true if any of them are dynamics processors such as a compressor. Consider it housekeeping. Instagram Mail YouTube. Unlock Your Sound Ltd uses cookies to improve the experience and the content of this website.

And that cannot be achieved by just turning the Master track volume slider down. You must take care of the levels of gain of every single audio clip and plugin in your mix, one by one, in order to get a perfect balance between all your track elements always keeping the Master track volume slider at 0 dB.
Of course, it is not the only way to do it, but it is the logical way to manage gain stages to maximize sonic quality:. One thing you must keep in mind is that every gain change you make affects every other gain stage that occurs after it.
And by gain change, we mean every gain and volume slider you adjust, including clips and plugins. Therefore, since having to adjust so many elements can be a bit overwhelming, it is important that you do it in a specific order:.
However, in Logic Pro X, it can be done in just a moment. In other DAWs, search in the manual to find out. We are going to be working with a track at a time, starting with the first one. We will solo it and proceed with step 4. At this stage, aim to have the Master level at around dB. See below. I recommend you look into using the K-System, or for a very quick and easy way to do this, I wrote a blog on how to do this simply using your ears and the Spotify app for Mac. Now that you have calibrated your monitoring, it will be near impossible to overcook the mix as anything louder than dBFS RMS will be loud to your ears, forcing you to practice decent level management.
The solution is as simple as loading a Gain utility Logic stock plug-in on the master bus Stereo Out and raising the volume of the mix from there. You should be able to get it loud enough that you can hear it comfortably whilst preventing the channel from clipping. At this point, your mix is well balanced and the level on the master bus is close enough to 0dBFS without clipping.
